When Do FPIES Reactions Occur?

Many people find that certain foods trigger IBS symptoms. However, IBS-like symptoms after consuming dairy products may result from lactose intolerance. In irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), also called functional bowel syndrome, irritable colon, spastic bowel, and spastic colon, the contractions become too strong or long lasting, moving food along too quickly or too slowly.

Eat regular meals, drink plenty of fluids and get exercise, all to help your colon function well. No one knows what causes IBS. Doctors think it might be related to neurotransmitters in the gastrointestinal tract or bacterial infection. In some people, certain foods seem to trigger an extreme reaction of the digestive system. When reverting back to kibble after a period on a home-cooked or prescription low fat diet, it may be better to soak it using a little warm water for about 30 minutes prior to serving.

These reactions are not as severe or immediate as an FPIES reaction. Be aware that if a child passes the in-office portion of the challenge, it does not mean this food is automatically guaranteed "safe." If a child's delay in reaction is fairly short, a child may fail an FPIES food challenge while still at the office/hospital. For those with longer reaction times, it may not be until later that day that symptoms manifest. Some may react up to three days later.

Possibilities that trigger this can include milk protein intolerance (even to your milk or something in your diet), poor tolerance of vaccinations, or exposures to antibiotics either for you while pregnant, during delivery, for you while breastfeeding, or directly for the baby. FPIES reactions often show up in the first weeks or months of life, or at an older age for the exclusively breastfed child.

My question is…what would you recommend if I start to have reflux during the transition period? Should I try to reduce my PPI intake in the beginning instead of stopping it all together? Should I expect to still have some reflux during the transition from PPIs? How long does it usually take to repair gut health when going off PPIs?
