Water-soluble organosulfur compounds like SAC and its metabolite, N-acetyl-S-allyl-L-cysteine, may be used as reliable markers of compliance in clinical trials involving garlic intake (6, 18). The absorption and metabolism of allicin and allicin-derived compounds (see Figure 2) are only partially understood (7). In humans, no allicin has been detected in the serum or urine up to 24 hours after the ingestion of 25 g of raw garlic containing a significant amount of allicin (8). Before ingestion in garlic preparations and after ingestion in the stomach, allicin likely breaks to release a number of volatile compounds down, including DAS and DADS. These organosulfur compounds are metabolized to allyl mercaptan, allyl methyl sulfide, and allyl methyl disulfide, which have been detected in human breath after garlic consumption (9-11).
Make the tofu dip by putting one package of silken or soft tofu in a food processor or blender, adding garlic powder, cumin, paprika and chopped chives or parsley for flavor and color. The Acid reflux condition would not exist without a damaged esophagus and a weakened LES (lower esophageal sphincter). The first thing that I learned is that acid reflux, sometimes called gerd (gastro esophageal reflux disease), is not a disease at all.
Taking garlic by mouth does not seem to reduce the risk of developing lung cancer. Inherited high cholesterol (familial hypercholesterolemia). In children with high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL or “bad”) cholesterol, taking garlic powdered extract by mouth does not seem to improve cholesterol levels or blood pressure. Breast cancer.
However, foods that are “alkalizing†can be high pH, literally an acid when they go into your body. This acid can hurt you if you have reflux – before it gets far enough to have an alkalizing effect.
However, the effects of garlic are not clear. Heart disease. Some early research suggests that taking a specific garlic product (Allicor, INAT-Farma) for 12 months reduces the risk of sudden death and heart attack in people at risk for developing clogged arteries.
Basil leaves also have antiulcer properties which reduce the effect of gastric curb and acids gas production. Basil leaf juice and powder are often used in Ayurvedic medicines for indigestion also. Bananas are extremely beneficial for gut and stomach health because of their high fibre content which enhances the digestion process. They are rich in potassium and increase the production of mucus in the stomach which prevents excess acid formation and also fights the harmful effects of excessive acid production. A ripe banana is a perfect antidote to severe bouts of acidity.
A systematic meta-analysis and review by Xiong et al. (106) included seven randomized, placebo-controlled trials that exclusively enrolled individuals with high blood pressure, i.e., with systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥140 mm Hg and/or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥90 mm Hg. Five out of seven trials identified in this systematic review reported statistically significant reductions in SBP and DBP with several garlic preparations (dried garlic homogenate, garlic powder, and aged garlic extract) (106). Another recent meta-analysis included nine randomized controlled trials in 482 hypertensive individuals who were given garlic powder (six studies), garlic homogenate (one study), aged garlic extract (two studies), or placebo for 8 to 26 weeks (107). Garlic preparations were found to reduce SBP by a mean of 9 significantly. 1 mm DBP and Hg by a mean of 3.8 mm Hg compared to placebo.
Research with other products containing garlic along with other ingredients (Kyolic, Total Heart Health, Formula 108, Wakunaga) have also shown benefits. In beverages and foods, fresh garlic, garlic powder, and garlic oil are used to add flavor.
Although a true number of biological activities have been attributed to various allicin-derived compounds, it is not yet clear which of these compounds or metabolites actually reaches target tissues (5). Allyl methyl sulfide – but not allyl mercaptan – has been detected in the urine within four hours of garlic ingestion, suggesting that this compound is absorbed into the circulation and rapidly excreted (11).
Garlic seems to modestly reduce pre-meal blood sugar levels in people with or without diabetes. It seems to work in people with diabetes best, if it is taken for at least 3 months especially. It’s not known if garlic reduces post-meal blood sugar levels or HbA1c levels. Other uses include treatment of fever, coughs, headache, stomach ache, sinus congestion, gout, joint pain, hemorrhoids, asthma, bronchitis, shortness of breath, low blood sugar, snakebites, diarrhea and bloody diarrhea, tuberculosis, bloody urine, a serious throat and nose infection called diphtheria, whooping cough, tooth sensitivity, stomach inflammation (gastritis), scalp ringworm, and a transmitted disease called vaginal trichomoniasis sexually.
Heartburn and Reflux Key Words
pylori. Hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis).
As people age, their arteries tend to lose their ability to stretch and flex. Garlic seems to reduce this effect. Taking a specific garlic powder supplement (Allicor, INAT-Farma) twice daily for 24 months seems to reduce how much hardening of the arteries progresses. Higher doses of this product seem to provide more benefits in women than men when taken over a four-year period.
If you need supplemental iron, consider separately taking it. There are several forms of iron that are more gentle on the stomach; these may be a good option for people who experience stomach upset even when taking iron with food. A number of other supplements can cause nausea or stomach upset.

Web. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a digestive condition in which the stomach’s contents often come back up into the food pipe. Dietary changes can help to ease symptoms. For example, high-fat and salty foods can make GERD worse, while eggs and some fruits can improve it.
